BEST PRACTICE CLUB: IS TOO MUCH FOCUS ON NET ZERO AND SCOPE 3 CLOUDING THE BIGGER PICTURE?

01 May 2024
Working Groups Theatre

• "Hundreds of businesses drop net zero commitments due to Scope 3 challenge" - edie, 12th March 2024

• The Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) recently reported that 239 companies including prominent brands such as Diageo, Microsoft, Unilever, Marks & Spencer and Procter & Gamble had their commitments removed which implies that these companies have stepped back from some of the net zero commitments they'd previously made.

• 54% of respondents identified Scope 3 emissions as a major barrier as well as uncertainties about future technologies, lack of a net zero standard and insufficient data.

• In this interactive panel session, we'll dig into these challenges and address whether the way supply chains are framing their net zero goals is risking the bigger picture goal of sustainability.

• Discussion points to include:

• Is too much focus on net zero and Scope 3 become counter-productive? Is it creating blind spots and hidden risks?

• - How should we define 'the bigger picture'? Resource efficiency? Biodiversity?

• Do we have the collaborative leadership required to develop a sustainable supply chain eco-system? What structural barriers are preventing sustainability improvements?

• How can we overcome the Scope 3 barriers cited and rebuild momentum towards genuine supply chain sustainability?
