SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL: THE KILLER APP FOR NUCLEAR

Kerosene is an incredibly energy dense fuel enabling, for example, a 560 tonne Airbus A380 carrying over 500 passengers to stay in the air for over 15 hours whilst flying from Los Angeles to Melbourne. This level of energy density just isn’t possible with batteries or hydrogen, due to the hard restrictions of chemistry and physics. But what if instead of decarbonising the plane, we decarbonise the fuel? In this talk, Alasdair Lumsden from Carbon Neutral Fuels will cover what it will take to decarbonise aviation via sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), go through some of the numbers, and also explain how SAF is perhaps a greater opportunity for the nuclear sector than domestic electricity production.
