Jonathan Smith
Jonathan Smith has served as London Fire Commissioner since July 2025. He is also the National Security Lead for the National Fire Chiefs Council.
Prior to taking over as Commissioner, Jonathan was London Fire Brigade’s Deputy Commissioner and Operational Director for Preparedness and Response, which included overseeing London’s fire stations, firefighters, and control officers. He held strategic operational leadership roles during the extreme wildfires experienced in London in July 2022 and during the severe flooding that took place in July 2021.
Jonathan has also represented London at national strategic forums, including the National Resilience Board, the Counter Terrorism Strategic Board, and the Operational Preparedness, Response and Resilience Committee. He served as the National Fire Chiefs Council’s strategic lead for Marauding Terrorist Attacks (MTA).
Jonathan began his firefighting career in 2000 with Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service at Norwich City Fire Station. In 2008, he joined Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, rising through the ranks before moving to London Fire Brigade (LFB) in 2019 as an Assistant Commissioner.
