James Claypole
I graduated from Cardiff University with an Honours degree in Civil Engineering, and then went on to study for a PhD in Nanotechnology at Swansea University.
Before launching Ail Arian, I was part of the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating (WCPC) at Swansea University, where I worked on a range of projects using printed electronics, including one that led to the development of heated garments for the 2020 Olympic Games.
It was during this time that I noticed a serious gap in the industry, as there wasn’t an easy or sustainable way to recycle the waste material from the printing process, or the final products once they had reached the end of their life.
That concern led to the creation of our recyclable silver ink.
With my newly patented technology, I completed the Innovate UK ICURe programmes, Engage, Explore, and Exploit, which gave me the chance to further refine my concept, gain valuable business training, and ultimately launch Ail Arian.
Outside of work, I love sailing. I’m a qualified Royal Yachting Association (RYA) dinghy instructor and regularly volunteer at my local yacht club to teach youth sailing. I also hold a powerboat licence and recently completed my RYA Day Skipper qualification.
