Description

Nellie Mwyndy Cross is a containerised, modular carbon dioxide removal (CDR) system engineered for scalable deployment across agricultural, peri-urban, and industrial settings. It captures atmospheric CO₂ using high-yield microalgae, grown in closed-loop photobioreactors, before processing the biomass through a controlled pyrolysis cycle. The result is PhycoChar®—a high-integrity biochar that sequesters carbon for centuries when applied to soil—and a nutrient-rich biofertiliser derived from the residual growth liquor. The system also generates usable low-carbon heat.

Mwyndy Cross units are designed for plug-and-play operation, requiring minimal infrastructure and adaptable to off-grid or grid-tied locations. All removals are independently verified through a robust Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) protocol, making the system eligible for carbon credit issuance in voluntary and emerging compliance markets.

Beyond carbon capture, Mwyndy Cross supports regenerative agriculture, soil health improvement, and local circular economy development. Units are built in the UK and optimised for distributed rollout, with a focus on rural job creation and land-based co-benefits.

Already in commercial use and supported by UKRI and the Royal Academy of Engineering, Mwyndy Cross is a proven, market-ready CDR solution that helps accelerate climate action while delivering practical environmental and economic benefits.
