Description
CoolRun pods are temperature-controlled food transport containers. Our pods use passive cooling technology via Phase Change Material (PCM) batteries to keep food chilled for 30 hours, or frozen for 15 hours. This removes the need for onboard truck refrigeration thereby eliminating all associated emissions from diesel or refrigerants.
PCMs undergo cooling at the depot and are subsequently placed into the pods, which are then filled with chilled and frozen food before being loaded into vehicles for transportation thus enabling the cooling energy requirement to be transferred from vehicle – (diesel) to depot-based (renewables).
Overview
- In Greater London alone, TRUs on 15,000 refrigerated trucks emit 84,000 tonnes of CO2 and other pollutants annually.
- If the power used to chill the PCM plates is from non-renewable sources, the system will still eliminate 92% of emissions compared to truck refrigeration (100% if using renewable sources).
- Switching to CoolRun saves operators £4,200 in capital costs, and £8,217 annually in running costs, mainly diesel, totalling £82,173 over 10 years compared to traditional refrigerated trucks.
