At Reclinker (formerly Cambridge Electric Cement) we are developing a proprietary process for recycling cement. We have shown that cement recovered from demolition waste works well as a flux in the electric arc furnaces (EAFs) used for recycling steel. Exposure to the high temperatures in the EAF turns the cement back into clinker (the output of cement kilns).
Using recycled cement and an electrically driven heat source allows us to create cement with a carbon footprint well below that of conventionally produced cements. At the pilot scale we have achieved compositions that meet the definition of Portland cement.
We are now scaling-up our process and expect to be in volume production within the next year.
